O’Neill labels no-confidence attempt as “mischievous”

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has expressed his appreciation to the members of parliament who showed support for him during the vote of confidence in him today.

He described the move by the Opposition for a vote of no confidence as “mischievous”

“An ambitious motion they introduced which really is disappointing,” O’Neill says

He says this is because the country has challenges before it and as leaders they must take responsible positions and not use parliamentary systems to grab power.

O’Neill says his government has a good track record over the last three years where they have provided more jobs than ever before and have put more children into schools.

“We are expanding our health care to all communities throughout the country, we are improving law and order in many places of our country and women and children are able to walk around freely during night and any time of the day. It is a clear indication of improving law and order,” he added.

He says there is no room for the games seen in recent weeks where a handful of Opposition politicians have distracted attention away from policy debate.

“The nation faces serious challenges from drought, climate change and low global commodity prices so now is the time for all leaders to focus on the welfare of our people,” says O’Neill.

He also says the 2016 national budget will be handed down next Tuesday.

“We expect a mature budget response from the Opposition.

“This is a very important budget considering current global conditions and domestic demands for ongoing infrastructure development.”

The Prime Minister said the expressed confidence of the Parliament was another reassurance to the business community that Papua New Guinea continued to be one of the most politically stable countries in the region.
