Noelyne Hetana grabs first gold in taekwondo for PNG

Noelyne Hetana has grabbed the first gold medal for PNG in taekwondo on day one of the competition at the BSP Arena.

Hetana defeated silver medallist Zhanna Sattsaeva of New Zealand in the 67kg category, winning the two rounds.

In the first round, Hetana took out the New Zealander 11-1 and maintained form to win the second round by a huge margin 20-7 despite suffering a knee injury.

Hetana said it was a proud moment for her to win gold on home soil.

“It means a lot to me because I have sacrificed a lot to achieve this result.

"I aimed to get gold and it’s a great moment to fulfil this,” she said.

Emily Kwoaetolo from Solomon Islands received the bronze.
