New classrooms for Highlands schools

Two more schools in the Highlands region have launched double classrooms that were proudly funded by Digicel PNG Foundation.

Map Primary School in Mendi Munhiu District of Southern Highlands Province and Tondomong in Mul Baiyer, in Western Highlands Province, were recipients of the Digicel Foundation funded double classroom kits, an investment of K480,000.

Foundation Chief Executive Officer, Beatrice Mahuru, says education is vital to growth. It drives social and economic development.

“Providing young children with access to basic education is one of our five key focus areas in Digicel PNG Foundation,” states Mahuru.

“Children spend much of their time in classrooms to learn. It’s a place from where their dreams are developed and nurtured to aspire for success in the world.

“Each time we fund one of these classrooms, we give 80 more primary school students the resolve to aspire for greatness,” stresses Mahuru.

The Map Primary School project, funded at a cost of K240,000, consists of a steel double classroom building with teacher’s office space in between, 40 desks to cater for 80 students, teachers’ desks and chairs, solar lighting, 9000L water tank and two ventilation improved piping pit toilets. It also has two bucket showers, especially for young primary school aged girls going through changes in their bodies.

Also in attendance to witness the launching of Map Primary School was the Member for Mendi, De Kewanu, who acknowledged Digicel as a model corporate citizen in PNG.

Kewanu expressed his gratitude of the investment Digicel has made in his electorate and urged his people to look after the classrooms.

In the Southern and Western Highlands Provinces alone, Digicel PNG Foundation has reinvested K4.9million in various education and health projects. Tondomong Primary and Map Primary are among 31 schools Digicel PNG Foundation has funded to date.
