NCDC moves in demolishes Kaugere Hill settlement

Settlers at the Kaugere Hill- Kaukana community were evicted on Monday July 11 of which they say they hadn’t receive any official notice to vacate the land.

Community leader Don Mune says all they know is that NCDC had authorised this action to have the settlers vacate the land and move out as soon as possible as some development was going to take place.

Mune says he is disappointed that Governor Parkop would do such a thing by inviting other people like developers to come in the name of development while ordinary Papua New Guineans would suffer.

He says with the inclusion of families, well over 600 people were evicted adding that this type of treatment is inhumane and NCDC should have organised a resettlement program for the families here before having them evicted.

He adds that in the meantime, families whose homes were taken down by bulldozers are now taking cover in whatever trees are left after the demolition on the hillside.

“I am concerned about my family, my kids who are going to school and the community of people who I live with,” Mune said.

Meanwhile, according to Acting Secretary for Lands and Physical Planning Luther Sipison ratifies that settlers who are found to be squatting on State land will be evicted.

Sipison confirmed that the two areas that had undergone eviction last week was the Eight-Mile Settlement in Moresby North East and Kaugere Settlement (Badu ILG) in Moresby South last Wednesday.

However Sipison said that the land in Eight Mile is marked for the Department of Agriculture and Livestock housing scheme.
