NCD women carry out market awareness at Gordon

“Lukautim Market na market bai lukautim yu” says the PNG NCD Gender Desk representative Kay Kaugla.

This was a challenge to the youths of Gordon’s community during an awareness campaign initiated by United Nations, National Capital District Commission and the Royal PNG Constabulary today at the Gordons market.

The campaign aimed at discouraging youths from harassing women and girls in the community especially at the Gordons market area and on the streets.

“People love to do shopping at Gordon’s market because it is cheap with fresh garden foods and vegetables, however, because of the bad image that Gordon’s area has of harassments, pick pocketing and bag stripping, people are going and buying from the supermarkets and even the small street markets when they can spend money in a local market to build it,”  Kaugla said.

“We are chasing the very people that are going to come to the community and give us the money for our bread and butter as well.”

She urged the youths and young men in the community to work with the mothers at the market to bring money back to the community as the NCD and the governments are now working closely to develop Gordon’s market.

Adding that the team is campaigning to ensure that Gordon’s market is safe for shoppers and the security of women and girls including men and boys in the area is guaranteed for a greater change that is to take place in the community.

Furthermore, the campaigning team announced to the Gordons community that they are campaigning to make Gordons safer before the construction of a three-storey market construction kicks off sooner.

“We are ready to build the three-storey building market, Are you ready?” Kaugla pose the final question to the youths.
