More workshops to gauge views for Internet Filtering Policy

The Office of Censorship will carry out a range of consultative workshops to gauge other views for an Internet Filtering Policy.

The first workshop took place in May this year.

The workshop gauged views from various stakeholders including government agencies and the private sector to come up with a better way to formulate the policy.

Chief censor Steven Mala said that the upcoming consultative workshops will gauge other views before they start drafting the policy.

He said they are yet to decide on the next meeting and a notice will be sent out when they’re ready.

Mala previously said during the first workshop: “Internet filtering is a significant idea that will protect the youths and children from cyber-crimes.

“We will not restrict the public’s freedom to information but the filtering concept ensures that we reduce the level and type of information that can be accessed.

“It may seem impossible to control information from the internet but we can’t use that as an excuse as we have to protect our cultural beliefs and our children at an extent from the western influence.”

Meantime, the Internet Policy draft is currently been drafted by the Department of Information & Communication.
