More medals on offer in track and field

More medals are on offer in day 4 of the XV Pacific Games track and field events at BSP Stadium today.

The first event, which is the women’s heptathlon long jump (event number 5),  will start proceedings at 3:30pm and the men’s 4x400 metres relay at 7:55pm will cap off what is expected to be another fun filled night.

Host nation Papua New Guinea are tuned up for another medal haul and with their recent dominance in the female sprints and men and women 400m clean sweep of medals,  the host venue is expected to be packed again.

In the women’s 100m and men’s 110m hurdles, PNG runners are the current champions and are clear favourites to maintain those tags.

However, Sharon Kwarula and Mowen Boino will have to be on top form as upsets  are a possibility. The New Caledonia women are strong in the event, and for the men’s event, veteran hurdler Boino will have to contain his understudies Wala Gime and Wesley Logorava.

PNG are expected to come into the finish line, 1, 2, 3 in the men’s 110m hurdles race. And in the 200m semi-finals heat and final, the fastest man in the Pacific, Ratu Banuve Tabakaucoro, is expected to defend his 200m title but with home crowd support,  Nelson Stone feeling a high from his 400m gold last night, will aim to cause an upset.

In the women’s 200m, Pacific sprint queen Toea Wisil is the clear favourite to grab her third gold in the sprints event.

And in the 4x400m relay, PNG are favoured to grab gold in the men and women’s races.

Meanwhile, in the field events PNG are now making amends after their poor showing in the previous Pacific Games.

They are expected to collect some medals for team PNG.
