More cancer screening for women during Pinktober

More screening will be carried out for cervical and breast cancer during Pinktober.

The Papua New Guinea Cancer Foundation (PNGCF) will be hosting a line of events to commemorate women’s cancer awareness month in October.

Known as Pinktober, the month of October is dedicated to raising more awareness on cancer affecting women.

PNGCF will be conducting a free cancer screening and awareness program in Papa and Lealea villages on Oct 12 and 13 respectively.

Free Pinktober workshops will also be carried out on Oct 10-17 in Port Moresby, focusing on breast and cervical cancer.

The annual Pink Ribbon Brunch is scheduled on Oct 28 at the Laguna Hotel with tables selling at K3500 for a table of 10.

PNGCF will be selling Pink Ribbon merchandise in Moresby as well.

CFPNG chief executive officer Dadi Toka Jnr said it is important to carry out these activities because there’re alarming cancer statistics for women’s cancer.

Toka explained that current statistics indicate that two women are dying every day from cervical cancer in PNG.

He stressed that 9 percent of hospital admissions in Moresby are a result of patients diagnosed with breast cancer

“You can protect your family by not smoking, chewing betelnut, reducing your alcohol intake and eating a healthy diet and exercise regularly,” he said.

PNGCF will be happy to provide cancer awareness brochures throughout the month, upon request.
