Moana breaks box office in PNG

Pacific’s first Disney Princess Moana has broken PNG’s box office record with more than 6,000 views over the weekend alone.

Paradise Cinema confirmed with Loop PNG that this has been its biggest box office sale ever.

The Disney film was premiered on November 24, capturing the hearts of Papua New Guineans and all other Pacific Islanders.

It attracted families, both young and old, to follow the adventurous journey of a young island princess with a mission to save her island, on the big screens.

“Most of the people who watched it came with their family and we are not just talking of the mom-dad-kids troupe but mom, dad, kids, bubus, nephews, nieces, aunties, uncles, etc. Some were crying after the movie and thanked Disney for coming up with their very first Pacific Princess,” the cinema management said.

Due to the demand, Paradise Cinema management has confirmed to have allowed for additional screenings.

“It was our biggest box office sales where we had more than 6,000 patrons who watched it over the weekend alone.

“Most of our sessions are sold out and we had to cancel the screening of other movies like Doctor Strange, Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge and Fantastic Beasts to give way to the additional screenings of Moana.”
