Minor damage to new stadium fence

Some damage was done to the National Sports Stadium in Port Moresby minutes after opening last night.

The fence at the grand stand was damaged by fans who wanted to meet the New South Wales Penrith Panthers players after the game.

Fans rushed the waist high fence forcing it to give way.

Security guards quickly stepped in and cordoned off the area.

A diehard fan and resident of Tete settlement, Philip Rex who witnessed the damaged from the outer stand facing the field towards Bisini couldn't believe what he saw.

He said the stadium was built to international standards but how could this happen?

"What a shame and an embarrassment to see such damage. These fences must be strong and firm. So as the seats and other structures of the stadium," he said.

The damage happened an hour later after the official opening of the multi million kina project by Prime Minister Peter O'Neill.

During his opening remarks the Prime Minister appealed to the public to look after the stadium as it was for their enjoyment.

"I appealed to all of you to look after the stadium so that you can enjoy your game here," O'Neill said.
