Mead arrives home

PNG Kumuls captain, David Mead, arrived quietly in the country on Friday to attend to family commitments for a week in his village at Tubusereia, Central Province.

The 28-year-old arrived with his one-year-old son Paxton and wife Taneal, and were greeted at the airport by family members.

“I’ll be here for one week; I’ve got to build my dad’s headstone. I’m looking forward to seeing all the family and celebrate the last part of my dad’s life,” said Mead.

The Brisbane Broncos recruit said he is excited about his one year contract with the Wayne Bennett coached side next year.

“Obviously I’ve been with the Titans for about eight years with the contract ending this year. Brisbane is a pretty good club I thought it would be a good move for me, so I’m definitely excited about it,” said Mead.

Mead predicts that he might be playing on the wing next year for the Broncos, but the decision will be on Bennett and how he utilises the PNG international.

“I am capable of playing any position at the backline and it will all depend on how the coach, Wayne Bennett, uses me and I’m just excited about the opportunity.

“I think I’ll be playing on the wing, you know they’ve got players like Darius Boyd there, James Roberts and other good outside backs and I’m pretty excited about that but I think my position will be on the wing.”

Mead said he would also love to play for PNG next year in the Rugby League World Cup as it is one of his goals however, the former Gold Coast Titan winger says that he will have to earn his position with the Broncos before he can earn a spot for the PNG Kumuls.

“I’m definitely looking forward to playing in the world cup next year for PNG but obviously, I’ve got to get through a whole year of playing rugby league first so that’s going to be my focus first.

“The World Cup is at the back of my head and that’s one of the goals to play in it but at the moment, I’ll be focusing on making sure I get a spot in the Broncos come round one,” said Mead.
