Maru: Koiari landowners to be paid soon

Minister for Trade, Commerce and Industry Richard Maru said no payment will be made to one Koiari landowner group but will be made to benefit all people in the four impacted areas.

His comments followed demands by a Koiari land group for the National Government to meet its outstanding commitment of K10 million for the usage of its customary land which house the Sirinumu Dam that supply water to Port Moresby and parts of Central Province.

The Koiari people of Central Province have already been paid K20 million for the usage of their land and water source last year.

“Koiaris who live where the source of water comes from to form the dam, Koiaris who live where the hydro is, also those around the PAU campus and Laloki areas will be paid together,” said Maru.

Maru is also the chairman of the Ministerial Committee on Koiari Sustainable Economic Package.

“Since the Court order I have led a team to Sogeri and we had an open dialogue with the people of Koiari and all of them are saying that people of PNG are enjoying our water but we do not have water and power connected to our homes.

“Next week my technical committee will be meeting with the four impacted area leaders to discuss the benefits flow and bring to the attention of the National Executive Council,” Maru said today.

He added that all payments will made in the interest of the people that will be sustainable in the long term.

Maru warned people who are issuing threats that they could be in contempt of Court.
