Madang Boxing, Kickboxing team set for PNG Games

MADANG Boxing and Kickboxing teams have been selected after the last trial tournament held in Sio village in Madang District.

The tournament saw boxers from Ramu Sugar Kickboxing Association challenging  Madang Kickboxing Association athletes to make the final selection.

Madang Provincial Community Development Assistant Director Joe Bande who is Team Madang was there to witness the fights and present the trophies and medals to the winners.

Bande said the tournament is the final one, and after that the selected boxers will go into training in preparation for the 7th PNG Games in Kimbe.

“The boxers took part in 53kg, 54kg, 55kg, 59kg, 60kg, 62kg and 65kg division,”

“Most of the boxers are locally grown and have not gone out fighting outside of Madang Province and this tournament has given them a glimpse of what to expect in the coming PNG Games,” Bande said.

He said in Kickboxing the boxers took part in 48-51kg division, 52-54kg division and 55-59kg division which saw some impressive fights from the local grown talents.

“ We have identified some good fighters who will represent Madang and most of them are new, young and energetic and ready to showcase that Madang can grab gold in boxing and kickboxing,”

“Ramu Sugar Boxing Association is well established and have brought in competitive fighters who performed very well and impressed the judges,” Bande added.

He added that the tournament was organized by a Luke Bernard who is a former PNG Boxer and who is in charge of Ramu Sugar team.

He said Madang Boxing and Kickboxing team is ready and looking forward to take part in the upcoming PNG Games.

He thanked the sponsors for the tournament Coca-Cola, and RD Tuna Canners and people of South Ambenob LLG for providing support during the tourney.

He added that the final selection will be announced when the judge’s selection committee hands in the final list to his office.
