Locals set up roadblock in fear of ‘take over’

Baruni Villagers in Central Province are taking necessary measures to protect themselves.

The Motu- Koitabuan men have set up roadblocks leading into the village because a two-week demand from a certain ethnic group from Enga Province will lapse tomorrow.

The Engans have demanded a K1 million compensation for injuries sustained by their two tribesmen. And if the demand is not met, they will take over the village.

Gawdi Rei, chairman of Tanomotu Clan of Baruni, told Loop PNG the incident happened on Easter weekend.

He said drunken youths stoned the victims’ vehicle, which resulted in a confrontation. The fight ended with the driver and passenger sustaining injuries.

"The four youths were surrendered to police on Sunday (the next day), charged at Boroko Police Station and are now out on court bail."

Rei added that from medical reports, the victims did not sustain life-threatening injuries.

“The roadblock started last night as a security measure.

"We have responded to their demand, telling them that the case is now before the law, but we will help in paying for medical bills and give bel kol (compensation)."

The chairman added that he had written to the Police Commissioner and NCD Police command for assistance to come to an agreement with the grieving party because the demand is "unrealistic".
