Locals kill escapee and friend

A fed up community killed a Buimo escapee along with another man after they caused nuisance at a local market.

The incident took place between 10.30pm and 11pm last Saturday (March 19th) at Busurum along the back road of Lae city (Malahang).

The two deceased earlier in the afternoon were under the influence of drugs and alcohol and were terrorising the market women and their children.

They went about Taweng market destroying market tables and stealing money and personal property from vendors and customers there.

Later that night, the community in the area, who was fed up with their behavior, confronted, beat up and stabbed the two men with knives and other blunt objects.

Both men died at the scene of the attack.

Lae Metropolitan police commander Anthony Wagambie Junior said the deceased escapee was initially arrested and charged two years ago for wilful murder. He was committed to stand trial in the national court when he escaped with the other prisoners a few weeks back.

Meantime, in retaliation, six to seven houses were burnt by relatives of the two men, prompting police to stand in and monitor the situation to avoid it spilling over into other nearby areas.

The bodies of the two are now at Angau hospital morgue while police are looking into the matter.
