Lae Dwellers suffer defeat against defending champions

Lae City Dwellers have suffered their second defeat at the OFC Champions League underway at QBE Stadium Oval in Auckland, New Zealand.

Dwellers lost to defending champions Auckland City 2-1 in a close encounter today.

The first half was tough as both teams failed to score which resulted in nil all at half time.

In the second half, the home team was the first to score 1-0 in the 65th minute through Daewok Kim.

Kim pops up to score his second goal of the tournament by tapping in from close range after a goalmouth scramble.

Dwellers leveled the score in the 85th minute through Raymond Gunemba who scored their first goal of the tournament.

Gunemba’s goal came after Nigel Dabinyaba’s short pass from a free-kick to Gunemba who curled his shot into the top left corner of the net.

It was an end-to-end action with both sides looking for a winner at this point.

Auckland wasted no time scoring its second goal 2-1 just 3 minutes later through Joao Moreira.

Moreira with a clinical finish passed the keeper from the right to give the lead back to the defending champions.

With four minutes extra time, this wasn’t enough to take Dwellers home as Auckland claimed its second victory in the tournament to go clear at the top of Group A.

Dwellers play their third match on Sunday 17 April against Solomon Warriors. This is a must win match for them.

Meanwhile, MRDC Hekari United FC is currently leading Group B. Hekari has won two of its matches and will play the third match against  Team Wellington on Saturday April 16.
