The PNG Kapuls campaign for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia began yesterday at the Sir Hubert Murray stadium in Port Moresby.
PNG Kapuls Coach Flemming Serritslev has returned to their training camp in Port Moresby to start their preparations.
Skipper David Muta, forward Tommy Semmy, defenders Koriak Upaiga and Daniel Joe have been released by their club Marist FC to join the camp.
They will be joined by Michael Foster, another Papua New Guinean player who plays as a midfielder for Marist’s rival club, Malaita Kingz FC in the semi-professional Telekom S-League in the Solomon Islands.
Also returning to the camp are veteran striker and OFC Nations Cup golden boot winner Raymond Gunemba and his former Lae City Dwellers teammate Nigel Dabiniyaba who is in Australia playing with the Western Pride FC.
However, both are expected to join the camp soon although their trip back home is yet to be confirmed.
Papua New Guinea has been pooled in group B alongside heavyweights Solomon Islands and Tahiti.
The winner of this Qualifier will take on South America’s 5th placed team for a place in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Russia.
With the football fans around the country still speaking highly of Kapul’s historic second place finish in the recent OFC Nations Cup, the Kapuls will be looking to put on another impressive performance when they host Tahiti at the Sir John Guise Stadium on March 20 next year in the opener.
