Juffa calls for calm along Kokoda highway

Oro Governor Garry Juffa has expressed regret at the death of a young man in Kokoda that has sparked a fight leading to massive destruction of properties.

Properties destroyed include the burning down of houses, roadblocks and stoning of vehicles owned by the Sime Darby Oilpalm Company.

Juffa has asked for calm and has advised the community to work with leaders and Police to hand over the suspect immediately.

Juffa told Loop PNG that it is rumoured the suspect who is known has been responsible for 10 murders and has never been caught.

It is also alleged that he had been released early this year when he had been charged by a policeman who had been bribed.

The named policeman is alleged to have deliberately tampered with complaints laid and destroyed evidence and has been reported to the Provincial Police Commander for disciplinary action.

The alleged killer is still  at large and is suspected to have fled for Port Moresby.

Meanwhile, tribesmen of the deceased have blocked the Kokoda Highway and have destroyed several settlements and homes in the company area.

Juffa has called for calm and has warned the people to allow the process of law to continue.

"Such activities are mainly alcohol related and many are now early campaign related. The Government should discourage early campaigning and a liquor ban is now being considered leading up to the elections."

Juffa also raised the issue in Parliament on Tuesday during the Budget debate.
