Heavy weather causing massive destruction in the Highlands

Highlands provinces are being hit hard by the heavy weather as rivers and streams burst their banks, causing massive destruction to properties and infrastructures.

The heavy rains in the region have also caused deadly landslides in the mountain villages with several already claiming lives, including destruction to properties like houses and food gardens.

Several unconfirmed deaths were reported in the remote parts of Enga, Southern Highlands, Hela and Western Highlands provinces.

The Highlands Highway, which coils through the region on mountain-sides and fast flowing creeks, has been hard hit with several portions being cut off from Markham Valley to Porgera in the Enga Province and Komo in the Hela Province.

Travelling along the highway which is considered the ‘lifeline’ of PNG has become dangerous and time consuming for travelers, PMV Operators, business houses and truckers.

People living on mountain-sides and along river banks and lowlands have vacated their homes as flood waters and landslips continue to hit those areas.

Many roads and bridges have been damaged while others have been threatened as the raging rivers and creeks create unprecedented havoc.

Food gardens, coffee plots and valuable lands are continuously being buried and destroyed on a daily basis.

Victims have called on their respective MPs, provincial governments and the National Disaster and Emergency Office to assist them with relief food supplies.

As the wet weather continues, more people are expected to be displaced.
