The Force Awakens breaks US Christmas Day box office record

Star Wars has broken yet another box office record.

After recording the biggest global opening of all time and a record US debut of $248m, The Force Awakens has now smashed the US record for Christmas Day box office receipts.

Lucasfilm and Disney's latest instalment in the space opera saga took $49.3m across the US on Friday - almost double the previous record, set by Robert Downey Jr's first Sherlock Holmes movie in 2009.

It also earned $27.5m from cinemas across the rest of the world for a global Christmas Day total of $76.8m, according to Coming Soon.

The Force Awakens is expected to cross the $500m milestone at the US box office by the end of the weekend - and if it does so, it will claim another record from Jurassic World, which earlier this year became the fastest movie to pass that mark.

The team behind Jurassic World - including Colin Trevorrow, who is now confirmed to direct Star Wars Episode IX - congratulated The Force Awakens on its record-breaking opening weekend with a poster showing a T-Rex passing on a medal to BB-8.
