FIFA U20 World Cup on target

The FIFA U20 World Cup 2016 is on target with preparations for venues and logistics.

The World Cup will run from 28 Oct-16 Nov in Port Moresby with 16 nations taking part.

The government has budgeted K10 million for the preparation for the FIFA World Cup.

All venues,  the National Rugby League stadium, Sir Hubert Murray stadium, the Sir John Guise stadium, the Bisini Grounds plus schools are being upgraded to FIFA standards.

Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko says funding is moving forward with a lot of infrastructure development happening, and the National Stadium to be ready next month.

Tkatchenko said the procurement exercise had already gone out last year for the lighting, stadium seating, equipment and irrigation system which had already been procured.

“We can’t waste any time, the funding is moving forward from FIFA as well as from the National Government.

“Some projects are delayed a couple of weeks but we will make that up as we progress over the next seven months,” said Tkatchenko.

He confirmed that staff and officials are now being employed to prepare for a very successful World Cup in November.

FIFA U20 World Cup chief executive officer Seamus Marten says it’s a big challenge but they will be able to achieve that by working together and deliver what will be “a fantastic window to PNG’’ for the rest of the world.
