Emperor’s 82nd birthday celebrated in PNG

The Japanese Embassy in Port Moresby last night celebrated the 82nd birthday of the Emperor of Japan, Emperor Akihito, marking the National Day of Japan.

The event was attended by Japan's Ambassador to PNG Morio Matsumoto, representatives from other embassies including Australia and the United States, Japanese people living in PNG and other stakeholders.

Akihito is the reigning Emperor of Japan, the 125th Emperor of his line according to Japan traditional order of succession.

Mr Matsumoto said at this age, Emperor Akihito remained actively dedicated to his official duties.

He spoke about the good relationship between PNG and Japan and how both countries had agreed on further strengthening of bilateral cooperation.

He said this was not only in the context of bilateral relations but also in the context of international affairs.

“I believe international relations are based on bonds of human ties.

“From this point of view,  our embassy continues its effort to increase Japanese culture related activities and promote exchange programs in order to strengthen and expand human ties,’’ he said.

After Mr Matsumoto addressed the crowd, a toast to the Emperor was made by Justice Sir Salamo Injia for his health and future wellbeing.
