DWU hosts two symposiums

Divine Word University hosted two academic symposiums that gave students and staff the opportunity to share their research and academic projects with the university community and the public on Friday at its Madang campus.

The Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (FASS) hosted its first-ever Research Symposium at the SVDMA Auditorium while the Information Systems Department in the Faculty of Business and Informatics hosted its 10th Information Systems (IS) Symposium at the Sir Peter Barter Auditorium.

The purpose of the FASS symposium was to encourage research and provide opportunity for selected best final year student research outcomes to be presented to the general public while the IS symposium aimed to enable final year students to present results of their final year development projects as part of their final year degree requirements.

The theme for the IS symposium was “Core values and research underpins our search for quality solutions in Information Systems and Technological advancements” having been derived from the university’s theme for this academic year “Core values and research underpin our search for quality” while the FASS didn’t have a theme for this year however due to wide range of research topics across the faculty.

Both symposiums had guest speakers from industry related institutions in which for the FASS included New Guinea Binatang Research Centre representatives while IS saw the likes of Telikom PNG.

Faculty of Arts&Social Sciences (FASS) had panel discussions in between the threesessions according toits three departments – Communication Arts, Social and Religious Studies and PNG studies while Information Symposium presentations were grouped into government and non-government industry specific segments.

FASS symposium featured a special tribute made to the late renowned anthropologist Nancy Sullivan in commemoration of her numerous contributions to research in PNG especially in Madang through the books that she produced with staff of DWU.

Meanwhile DWU has been recognized as a Cisco Academy by Cisco Systems therefore the Information Systems students will graduate next year with worldwide accreditation under the sponsorship of Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT).
