Dr Garap gets Eye Health Hero Award in South Africa

Dr. Jambi Garap has received the Eye Health Hero Award at the International Agency Prevention of Blindness 10th General Assembly in Durban, South Africa.

The Eye Health Hero program is an initiative of the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) in Partnership with the L’OCCITANE Foundation.

It is designed to celebrate eye care practitioners and frontline staff whose every day works behind the scenes is making a real difference towards world eye health care.

Out of the 24 winners who are selected throughout the world, two of them received travel grants through the foundation to receive the awards in person.

Dr. Jambi Garap was fortunate to be selected as one of the two grant winners. She was at the General Assembly and received the award in person on September 30, 2016.

Papua New Guinea also presented six posters and two oral presentations about PNG around eye health. PNG Eye Care, Fred Hollows Foundation New Zealand and John Farmer presented on different critical eye health issues.

Drew Keys, PNG Eye Care General Manager presented on Lions Contribution to PNG and its significances while Dr Garap presented on Prevalence of Trachoma in six districts in PNG.

The General Assembly is hosted by IAPB every four years and attended by over a thousand delegates and a galaxy of dignitaries from the political and public health spectrum.

The 11th General Assembly will be held in Auckland, NZ in 2020.
