Direct funding to ward levels

The Government intends to begin direct funding to the ward council levels in the 2017 National Budget.

This was announced by Minister for National Planning and Monitoring, Charles Abel, during the opening of the National Development Forum on Tuesday.

Abel said the government has been strong on empowering sub-national governments and have done so by first providing directly to the local level and now to the ward level.

He said a simple guideline has been created to ensure funding is properly spent.

“We have created a simple service delivery framework of government, that tells us which levels of services should be at which levels of government and who is responsible for them,” said Abel.

“Now back it up with the relevant funding all the way to the ward level and we empower our different levels of government to do some of the basic things and deliver to our people at those levels.”

Abel called on development partners to participate in the same process and assist the government deliver to the people.
