Digicel PNG Foundation invests K11.2 million in PNG

​The Digicel PNG Foundation has invested K11.2 million ($US4.6 million) in Health and Education projects in the country from 2014-2015.

This was revealed yesterday during the launching of the Foundation’s 2014-2015 Annual Report at the Digicel Learning Centre in Port Moresby.

Foundation Board Chairman, Douveri Henao said the Foundation had continued its support to its focus areas of access to basic education, basic health, community building, services for people with special needs and addressing violence.

The Foundation’s key achievements included:

  • Building 58 classrooms in 29 schools giving 1, 800 students improved learning environments.
  • Building of 5 fully stocked libraries.
  • Building of 5 mobile health clinics.
  • 68 community based teachers graduating with basic teacher’s certificates.
  • 82 people living with disabilities were impacted by the Community Based Rehabilitation program.
  • 3,300 people from socially marginalised communities equipped with basic business skills certificates.
  • 392 nominations received for the inaugural Men of Honour Awards.

“Reflecting on the year in review, we have continued to grow our footprint across the districts; steadfast in our goal to build conducive environments for basic education in rural communities.

“Taking basic health services to the door steps of remote villages and building the capacity of socially marginalised people to participate meaningfully in the country’s development,” said Henao.

He went on to thank the Foundation’s partners that shared the same development vision for PNG.

CEO of the Foundation, Beatrice Mahuru added that the Foundation will continue to work with its partners to empower people and communities through sustainable and meaningful projects and programs.

Since starting in 2008, the Foundation has invested K45 million back into the country.
