Climate officials to hold workshop in PNG

Green Climate Fund (GCF) officials will be in the country next month to carry out a workshop with the Climate Change Development Authority.

This was announced in Parliament on Friday October 28 by Minister for Environment and Conservation John Pundari.

GCF was established to assist developing countries finance their mitigation and adaptation programs.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration Rimbink Pato recently signed the Privileges and Immunity Agreement with Green Climate Fund (GCF) in New York, USA.

This enables PNG to secure assistance from development partners and international organisations to combat the effects of climate change.

The signing of the Privileges and Immunities Agreement paves the way for officials from GCF to enter PNG and work with government.

GCFs’ visit to PNG is to facilitate the readiness and preparatory stage for the purposes of accessing climate finance.

Pundari said the GCF senior officials and technical staff will work with the Government through the CCDA to assist PNG move forward in the implementation stage of the Paris Agreement.

Pundari thanked Minister Pato and Prime Minister Peter O’Neill for the approval in ensuring that we sign the agreement to ensuring privileges and immunities to our GCFs.

The GCF officials will build capacity and carry out outreach to relevant stakeholders and state agencies on accessibility to climate financing through CCDA as the national focal point to the GCF.

Pundari said once guidance is given by GCF on how funding can be accessed, project proposals can be prepared and funding made available to assist with climate change initiatives and renewable energy projects.
