City residents to celebrate Independence Day with festivities

Port Moresby city residents will celebrate Papua New Guinea’s 41st Independence Day in style with a feast of festivities lined up for the long weekend.

The National Capital District Commission (NCDC) have organised activities including a street festival, live concert, canoe race, community festival at  Nine-Mile and cultural activities at Jack Pidik Park.

The three days street and dance festival from September 15-17 will be held for the first time in PNG at the Paga Hill ring road comprising of music, arts and crafts while the canoe race will take place at Ela Beach.

The live concert will be staged at the Sir John Guise Stadium on Independence Day featuring West Papua legendary group the Black Brothers and PNG local artists.

NCD Governor Powes Parkop said when announcing the program to the media today that it’s a privileged to have the Black Brothers back in PNG for their tour after 28 years.

The theme for this year’s anniversary celebrations in Port Moresby is ‘We the Change’ which conveys two important messages.

Parkop said Moresby is always changing with its infrastructure development and the positive change in people’s attitudes.

“Port Moresby is not like what it is before, it is changing and these changes whether they’re small or big we got to celebrate these changes and capture the positive things so we can inspire ourselves.

“I need the city residents to recognise that and celebrate that so it motivates us to do more.

“We are going to give our people an extraordinary program for this year’s 41st Anniversary celebration,” Parkop said.

Parkop invites all city residents to witness and be part of the activities and wishes everyone a  happy Independence celebration for the country’s 41st anniversary.
