Changes made to New Ireland Day celebrations due to political situation

Due to Friday’s vote of no-confidence, the University of Papua New Guinea’s New Ireland students have made changes to their provincial day celebrations.

The two-day event has been changed to only a day of celebrations: July 23. It will be hosted at the Constitutional Park in Port Moresby.

UPNG New Ireland Students Association (NISA) president, Martin Bomuna, told Loop PNG that the battle of the bands event, scheduled for July 22, has been moved to August 27.

“This will also give the bands enough time to practice,” Bomuna said.

He urged the New Ireland community in Port Moresby as well the residents to come along and enjoy the culture, food and hospitality of fellow wantoks.

The theme of the event is: “Diversifying New Ireland culture through business and education”. Adults will pay K7, students K5 and children K2 to go in.

Singsing groups director Sonia Sebulon says interested individuals or parties should call now to register.

Bomuna can be contacted on7252 3465 while Sebulon can be reached on 7050 4738.

The New Ireland Day is annually held on July 23, coinciding with Remembrance Day.

In Port Moresby, the event is owned by UPNG-NISA.
