Catholic Church condemns violence against unarmed civilians

The Catholic Church condemned the use of violence against unharmed civilians and are willing to mediate peace with the disputing parties.

The General Secretary of the Catholic Bishops Conference, Father Victor Roche made this statement in a news conference today.

“Catholic Church is ready to mediate as a neutral third party in a Melanesian way to find a peaceful solution,” Fr Roche said.

“We appeal for all parties involved that there should be no violence.

“Especially there should be no violence by the disciplinary forces with arms on unharmed civilians.”

Fr Roche said corruption is the underlying issue and Parliament must address it.

“The Government must strengthen the Ombudsman Commission. Fast track the Independent Commission against Corruption and depoliticise the public service and the disciplined forces.”
