Capacity building vital in hazard management

Capacity building is important in managing hazards in Papua New Guinea.

RIMES institutional development specialist Ruby Policarpio said when talking about climate, authorities must not only look at the risks but also the opportunities.

Policarpio said what they’re trying to drive is that the climate and weather effects can be a resource and provide opportunities and not only risks.

She explained that rainfall might be a risk to an area but a resource in another area.

“We would like to drive that kind of perspective.

“So even in some countries that we work with when there is warning of cyclones that are likely to happen, people prepare for water catchment systems because they know that they can benefit from that resource.

“It’s a matter of changing that kind of perspective and we are looking at that particular capacity building to happen in PNG,” Policarpio said.
