Buyers beware, cautions PNG Power for festive lights

There are many illegal Christmas lights on store shelves and consumers must be vigilant when trying to purchase, warns PNG Power (PPL).

PPL acting chief executive officer John Yanis said staff were  working in close consultation with the Independent Consumer and Competition Commission and  the National Standard Council to stop the sale of illegal fittings.

“It’s quite hard at this point in time, we are managing that, but there are still back doors that are open (for the banned lights marking it to store shelves).

“It is a big challenge,” Yanis said.

PPL safety and awareness information on its website encourages shoppers to “always perform a basic safety visual check on Christmas lights before buying them.

“There has been an influx of illegal decorative lights into the country so always check the insulation thickness or plug configurations before purchasing the lights or any other product.”
