Bus plunge in gorge kills driver

15 people are admitted at the Kundiawa General Hospital with serious injuries after a PMV bus they were travelling in ran off the road and plunged down a 40 metre cliff between 3:00 – 4:00am Monday morning.

Simbu police described the bus in the crash as “crushed empty can”.

Provincial Police Commander for Chimbu Province Albert Beli says investigations have revealed the driver was not alert as a result of continuously driving from one province to another.

Mark Peya 35 from Ialibu in Southern Highlands was the driver and the only person who died during the accident.

PPC Beli says during investigations police found empty bottles of beer and concluded the driver and his crew were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

This PMV had travelled from Mt Hagen - Lae – Madang back to Lae and was travelling on to Mt Hagen when it met its fate.

He added that police will pick up on monitoring buses that travel non-stop carrying people who go to purchase betelnut in Lae and Madang.
