Baki: There is no room for violent persons in Police force

There is no room for violent person within the Royal PNG Constabulary says Commissioner Gari Baki.

His comments followed media reports of a policeman assaulting reporters at the Boroko Police Station this week.

Following condemnation and comments on social media, RPNGC media director Dominic Kakas said, “Police Commissioner Gari Baki is concerned about this and wants the matter immediately dealt with and the member dealt with both criminally and disciplined.”

Pacific Media Watchdog condemns assault on journalists and asks for full investigation into the allegations.

"Journalists across the Pacific join our PNG media industry in strongly condemning this disgusting abuse of power. Any member of the public must know that when they are in a Police station they are able to be reassured it is a place of safety where officers have full respect for the safety of citizens and the rule of law," says PFF co-Chair Titi Gabi of PNG.

"The brutal response from the civilian officer on duty displays a callous disregard for upholding public safety, and more disturbingly, reveals an attitude of impunity when it comes to violence assault against women."

"Nowhere in any democracy does a citizen seeking answers to simple questions earn the right to be shoved, kicked and abused by an officer paid to uphold public safety and respect for the law.

“We call on the highest level of responsibility within the PNG Police Force to account for this disgraceful misconduct and conduct an investigation resulting in the necessary charges being laid."

The journalists were trying to report on the arrest of school students for drinking home brew in public when they were assaulted.
