Australia launches new agriculture program for PNG

The Australian government will put up K10 million (AU$5million) for a new agriculture program called The Pacific Horticulture and Agriculture Market Access (PHAMA).

This program will provide practical assistance to the public and private sectors to increase the export of horticulture and agricultural produce to regional and international markets.

It will also help increase domestic agricultural production and export for those living in rural areas.

Australia’s High Commissioner Counsellor Rod Hilton says Australia’s development partnership with PNG is increasing assistance for private sector led economic growth in PNG to create jobs and reduce poverty.

Activities under the PHAMA

  • Assisting commodity sectors to develop plans related to development needs and exports.

  • Assisting with ongoing improvements to cocoa and coffee quality standards.

  • Commencing work on artifacts and handicrafts quarantine compliance awareness.

  • Providing assistance to further develop spice and chocolate products for exports.
