Arore wants water reservoirs installed in Popondetta

With the continuous rain affecting the water supply to Popondetta, Ijivitari MP David Arore has called for water reservoirs to be installed in the township.

Arore stated in Parliament today that Popondetta is affected every year, since cyclone Guba in 2007, with rain affecting the dam and water pump.

He called on the Minister for Public Enterprises and State Investment William Duma to explain if Water PNG has plans to establish permanent reservoirs in town.

Arore also asked if there are plans in place to relocate the water plant as the current location is always affected by flooding.

In response, Duma said he has not been briefed by Water PNG about the problem existing in Oro.

“I assure that I will look closely into this issue and I would be very surprised if Water PNG were sitting on this problem.

“If it means we will relocate the water plant then I will again seek the assistance of the Provincial Government and the member himself so that we will all work together to relocate the water plant,” said Duma.

Duma added that among all the water centres that are been operated by Water PNG, only Lae, Kokopo and Mt Hagen are profitable.

All other centres are regarded as social services and Northern Province falls into that category.
