AFL kicks off Southern regional selection matches

AFL PNG today kicks off its two-day Southern region junior carnival selection matches and tests at the Bisini sports ground in Port Moresby.

AFL Academy will host regional championships, selecting up to 50 kids in each division for four regional teams.

Pacific AFL development manager Ben Drew told Loop PNG that the Academy will host a two-day championship in Port Moresby starting today. Later they will travel to Lae to host Mamose  junior carnival before visiting the Islands region, starting in Kavieng, Kimbe, back to Kokopo and then to Mt. Hagen  for the Highlands region carnival.

“The carnival is set to select the PNG junior squad for the upcoming national and international junior championships in 2017, selecting under 14 and 16 for both male (junior Binatangs) and females (junior Kurakums),” Drew said.

“The carnival selection range is for the under 13 divisions where both male and female will make up the under 14 team, while the under 15 is for the under 16.”

For the Southern region championship which started today, the Kerema AFL squad for the first time is fortunate to be part of the program, challenging the Port Moresby based teams sorted into colors Red, Yellow and Green.

Fitness tests, including height and weight, agility, vertical jumps and 20m sprints, were given to assess individuals before the game.
