83 students graduate with certificate in hazard management

Eight three students from the University of Papua New Guinea graduated with Certificate in Comprehensive Hazards and Risk Management (CHaRM) today.

The ceremony was held at the UPNG Campus witnessed by fellow students, parents, lecturers and representatives from the National Disaster Centre.

The graduands were all in smiles receiving their certificates after 14 weeks of intense training at UPNG in 2015 on mitigation and management of a wide range of hazards in PNG.

The graduates mostly from Science disciplines and National Disaster Centre are the fourth batch of students to take on the CHaRM program since its inception in 2012.

In partnership with the PNG National Disaster Centre and UPNG, this training has allowed the PNG government to enhance human and capacity building throughout the country.

The graduands will be able to return to work in their provincial disaster offices as it supports the Provincial Government and its Wards staff to manage all form of disasters at home.

Head of the Environmental Science and Geography and the course coordinator, Professor Chalapan Kaluwin congratulated the students as they’re now able to go out and practice what they’ve learnt.

They learnt about management and designing policy development in mitigating dangers, threats and risks in the country and the Pacific.

Kaluwin confirmed that 197 students have received their certificates in recognition of attendance to this concentrated program and today another 83.

Director of PNG National Disaster Centre Martin Mose said the course allows for experts from various disaster related fields to integrate with students for more practical hands on approach.

Mose expects these graduates to continue and enroll for the new Bachelor of Sustainable Development at UPNG next year.
