70 participants attend cancer awareness workshop

About 70 women participated yesterday in the free cancer awareness workshop on breast and cervical cancer in support of the Women’s Cancer Awareness Month.

The one-day workshop was carried out by the Papua New Guinea Cancer Foundation in Port Moresby.

The participants came from Airswift, Lahara Day Women's Fellowship, Swire Shipping and JM Ocean Avenue.

Education on breast and cervical cancer was conducted by PNGCF health educator Lois Booker.

Booker explained what cancer is, how to recognise early signs and symptoms and how they can protect themselves from the disease.

These include chewing betel nut, smoking and drinking alcohol, unhealthy diet and lack of exercise can increase one’s chance of getting some types of cancer.

Another workshop will be conducted on October 17. The workshops are aimed to reduce the threat and impact of cancer through education and awareness.

PNGCF marketing and fundraising manger, Hayley Chown, said the training was a success and they have had a really positive response for next Monday's event.

She thanked sponsors, namely Royal Papua Yacht Club, JM Ocean Avenue, Moore Printing and DHL, for joining the fight against cancer in PNG.

Interested participants can register by emailing events@cancerfoundation.org.pg or through Facebook.
