50 DWU Morobe students likely to withdraw due to funding issues

50 Morobe Province students studying at the Divine Word University may be forced to withdraw from their studies this year.

A student leader told Loop PNG that the school administration this morning advised those students who are under provincial government scholarships, that funds from the government will not be going through.

As a result, a total of 37 male and 13 female students who depend on the Morobe Provincial Government scholarship have been advised to withdraw.

The students were told – through a guarantee letter– that the assistance will not eventuate due to fund shortages brought on by the economic situation.

The school will only allow students under private company scholarships to continue while those under respective government scholarships will withdraw and resume studies in 2017.

The announcement came as a surprise to the unsuspecting students, who are now expected to pay their full tuition fees on their own.

Morobe Students Association president Jason Imbong told Loop PNG that transferring to another school is not an option right now because of timing.

He said at the moment student leaders are discussing alternative options with the school administration.

“We would like to see into the option to transfer funds from students who have overpayment to those who need the assistance,” Imbong said.
