400 rural people to benefit from outreach health program

Over 400 people from all over the rural Bundi area including areas along the borders of Jimi, Simbu and Eastern Highlands Province will get to benefit from a rural outreach health program.

The outreach program will be carried out from October 10-12 at Snow Pass in Bundi.

The program will involve four specialist doctors and a nurse from Kundiawa General Hospital’s Rural Outreach Program (ROP), a nurse from Bundi Health Centre and the Snow Pass Medical Dispensary (SPMD).

The medical team will be treating patients with tuberculosis, bone diseases, vision problems, anti-natal and sick children and adults.

Chronic backbone injuries, high mortality rates, vision problems and knee problems are prevalent health issues for these remote mountain dwellers who survive by cultivating the land.

Community impact projects director Vincent Kumura said the program aims to address the prevalent healthcare needs in the Bundi area.

Kumura, who is Digicel’s Men of Honour and the Community Ingenuity Award Winner, came up with the initiative to assist the rural people who do not have access to Kundiawa Hospital.

The Snow Pass dispensary is the only medical centre set up at remote Upper Bundi and this will be the first time for the ROP team from Kundiawa Hospital to reach out to Bundi.

The three days program will cost about K5,000 which includes food, transportation, fuel, housing, generators, and canvasses.

Kumara said any interested individuals, business houses and donor agencies are encouraged to assist with funding.

All referrals will be made to Kundiawa Hospital.
