Show Queen title goes to Gabensis lass

Morobe lass Nandi Steven was crowned the 2015 Morobe Show Queen during the annual event in Lae over the weekend.

Steven, 23, also walked away with K1000 cash as the prize money.

She hails from Gabensis village in the Wampar LLG of Huon District.

The queen contest was one of the highlights of the show which gave the young Papua New Guineans an opportunity to take pride in and display their cultural heritage.

The exhibit was for young women, aged 14 years and above. They were judged on their knowledge, and presentation of their traditional dress, as well as their grooming and personality.

Steven (pictured), who works as an operator at the SP Brewery in Lae, said she was proud of her culture and winning the contest was one of the greatest moments in her life.

She thanked Lae Biscuit and all other sponsors for giving her the opportunity to promote and share her culture.

Her cousin sister, Collina Tetang, won the title last year.

“Other cultures cannot beat mine,” Steven said.

“Whoever comes after me will also be the winner because our culture is unique and is in the blood of every generation from Gabensis.”

Gabensis is the big village after Markham bridge along the highway to Bulolo.

Morobe Show’s PR Counselor Helen Taylor said Gonly four women took part in the competition this year and all of them were winners.

The first runner-up was Benitha Bobola of Simbu, second runner-up was Shelly Tabe from Enga and Monica Kama, also from Enga, walked away with the Judges Encouragement Award.

The Morobe Show Queen idea was only started a decade ago and the Lae Biscuit Company has been the sole sponsor ever since, making this the 10th year.
