PNG eyes hosting 2026 Commonwealth Games

After hosting the successful 2015 Pacific Games and FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup events, Papua New Guinea now eyes the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

This was announced today at the PNG Football Stadium by the NCD Governor, Powes Parkop, and the Minister for sports, National Events and APEC, Justin Tkatchenko.

Governor Parkop said it is about time the Commonwealth Games come to the Pacific, especially to the smaller island states.

“We are looking to bid for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, but, if they don’t accept our bid then we will bid for the Youth Olympics.

“We are already a global city with a global capacity and we will stay at a global level with sports and other international events,” Parkop said

He says ee don’t have to convince them to give us the host; we have proven it through the Pacific Games, which is just like the commonwealth, that we can host successfully.

“We will host another successful event as we maintain our reputation in the Pacific and the globe.”
