Fake licence producers risking people’s lives: Police

Police and Traffic Registry have been blamed by the public many times on the issuance of licences to unqualified drivers.

“Now we have come to realise that licenses are being produced outside of the Government mandated Traffic Registry. This is partly to be blamed for the increase in road accidents and careless driving,” says Lae police boss, Anthony Wagambie Jnr.

“This act in itself, of producing fake driver’s licence, may seem trivial to the person/s producing them, but it is much more than that. They are putting so many people’s lives at risk for just K100.”

Wagambie Jnr was speaking in light of the recent arrest of a graphic designer, who was suspected of producing fake drivers’ licences.

“That K100 allows these individuals to have access to licence and drive motor vehicles on a road. Most of them are PMV drivers, putting the lives of their passengers at risk.

“PMV bus owners must also play their part in operating clean, professional service with properly licensed drivers. They are making money every day, they must not put their passengers and travelling public’s lives at risk.”

Police and Road Safety officers in Lae have been conducting random traffic road blocks and vehicle checks recently, said Wagambie Jnr. This is in light of accidents being caused by unroadworthy and reckless driving.

“Traffic section in Lae has no working vehicle so we have to liaise with other joint partners to carry out such operations. We will soon be targeting PMV operators who do not conduct their business within the confines of the Traffic Law.”
