Tourism developed through knowledge

Divine Word University hosted its 10th LikLik Diwai Tourism Expo at the Madang campus last Friday.

Head of Department (HOD) Theresia Kau said it was an ‘authentic assessment’ which was staged by final year students studying Event Management.

Kau said the department looks at advancing sustainable tourism, through knowledge creating and sharing for economic development, during the annual event.

She said sharing knowledge, would lead to developing the tourism industry, which would lead to economic development in the society.

“There is no better way to develop tourism than to work as a team and through creation of knowledge,” said the department head.

The department was privileged to have three guests from the industry as guest speakers; Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority (PNGTPA), Senior Human Resource Officer, and keynote speaker, Joel Ombo, President and Co-Founder of PNG Surfing Association (PNGSA), Andrew Abel and Managing Director of Snow – Pass Eco Lodge and Founder of Kumura Foundation Vincent Kumura.

The expo included speeches from guest’s speakers, as well as touring of exhibitions staged by local tourism business in Madang.

The event ended with department staff and some students’ presentation of research papers and lunch.

Meantime, the expo is an annual calendar event of the university, staged by fourth year students from Department of Tourism and Hospitality, as part of their assessment.
