A sign of solidarity

Catholic bishops from the region are arriving in the country for the weeklong Assembly of Federation of Catholic Bishops Conference of Oceania.

Among the delegation that arrived today was Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State and second to the Pope of the Catholic Church.

The cardinal will be addressing the federation, speaking specifically on climate change, a current issue greatly affecting the region.

The federation is held every four years, attracting not only bishops but also specialists well versed with climate change, deep-seabed mining, and plight of refugees and youth vocations.

Upon welcoming these visitors, head of the CBC PNGSI, Fr. Victor Roche said the presence of cardinal Parolin will add significance to the event.

President of CBC PNGSI, Bishop Rochus Tatamai said the event was a great sign of solidarity in addressing the issues that concern the people.

Also having the opportunity to address the media during the press conference today was Prof Dr. Ottmar Edenhofer, Deputy Director and chief economist with the Potsdam institute for Climate change impact research.

Prof Edenhofer said Oceania region is most impacted by the Climate change.

Unfortunately, he said this is the effect of actions by developed countries, and added that the region must push for immediate action by these developed nations.
