Rumginae primary gets new classroom

Students of Rumginae Primary School in Western Province were the lucky recipients of PNG Sustainable Development Program’s education project, which saw the successful construction and opening of a double classroom recently.

The additional infrastructure will go a long way in accommodating the needs of the school as it notes the expansion in student enrolment.

Rumginae Primary School was established in 1962 and has served Western Province well.

However, like many rural institutions, the school has infrastructural challenges.

The opening of the additional classroom opens the door to more opportunities and improved learning for the students.

“It is a new era you have set for Rumginae Primary School and Western Province,” said Head Teacher Awa Getame.

Speaking at the opening of the double classroom, Dr Betty Lovai, one of PNG’s renowned female scholars, said remoteness should never deny Papua New Guinean children the right to education and the project demonstrates overcoming these barriers.

“Isolation should not discourage anybody in attaining formal education,” said Dr Lovai, Board Director of PNG Sustainable Development Program.

This project was delivered through the partnership program between the PNG Sustainable Development Program and Digicel Foundation to improve education infrastructure in Western Province.

It primarily aims to increase literacy and numeracy levels in the Province through classrooms which are conducive for learning.

“The reasons why partnerships come is because of shared values. Yupla long asples gat seim veliu wantaim mipla long Digicel na PNGSDP. Displa value, yupla laikim pikinini blong yupla kisim save na bikos long displa, we see this classroom standing,” said Douveri Henao, Chairman of Digicel PNG Foundation.
