Prisoners clean up Kavieng town

Kavieng, in New Ireland Province, came to life early Wednesday morning as prisoners, armed with bush knives and rakes, cleaned up the small town in anticipation of two major provincial events.

Inmates from the Kavieng Correctional Institution are preparing the provincial capital for the opening of the Government Official Residence on Friday, March 16.

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, along with a number of Government ministers, will be participating in the event.

Prior to that, Government dignitaries will be travelling to Namatanai, from East New Britain, for the official opening of the government house on Thursday, March 15.

Construction of the Namatanai Government House started in 2016.

An official from the New Ireland Provincial Government told Loop PNG that the building will house important guests.

“We never had a place for important visitors to overnight at Namatanai. They would either go on a one-day trip or travel down to Kavieng and spend the night.”

The Kavieng official residence, on the other hand, has been rebuilt after fire gutted the previous building over 8 years ago.

Customary rituals, traditional singsing, dancing and choir are expected in the next two days.

Officials and invited guests are scheduled to depart Kavieng on Saturday, March 17.
