PIH celebrates women

Pacific International Hospital joined the rest of the world on Thursday to recognise efforts in bridging gender parity in PNG.

Commemorating the International Women’s Day, the hospital ended the day with a second episode of "Women of the World - PNG Chapter".

Teaming up with EMTV and Moresby Arts Theatre, the evening saw a presentation of videos, music, dances and panel discussion.

The event, held at the MAT, attracted mostly heads of organisations in government and private sector, stakeholders and NGOs, to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of PNG women.

The panel discussion was facilitated by the US ambassador to PNG, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu Catherine Ebert-Gray.

Panelists were women who have succeeded in their respective areas; Linda Bababo O’Neill - a businesswoman and wife of the Prime Minister, Helen Macindoe – Chairperson at Cricket PNG, Jacqui Joseph – Co-founder and CEO of Equal Playing field, Bosa Togs – General Manager of IT at Telikom PNG and New Zealand’s High Commissioner to PNG – Sue Mackwell.

Discussing around this areas, interesting points were raised on how Papua New Guinea can press for progress.

This included suggestions like: education and awareness being paramount for both young women and men and that progress starts with an individual.

More importantly, the message stressed was to supervisors and managers: “You have the power to press for progress for your women employees”

Also in attendance at the event was Deputy Prime Minister, Charles Able, who reiterated that the challenge was for an individual to press for progress on a daily basis.
