NCDC condemns Gordon informal markets

The National Capital District Commission has condemned the establishment of unauthorised informal markets at Gordon’s.

The markets division states that all vending is expected to be done at designated markets and neither the division nor the Commission will tolerate the business of selling and buying from illegal pop up markets.

The relocation of hundreds of Gordon Market vendors to other designated markets has been met with some degree of dissatisfaction, resulting in them creating unauthorised informal markets.

The markets division came out publicly, clearly stating NCDC’s stance in this matter.

NCDC acknowledges the security concerns and risks associated with the creation of illegal informal markets therefore they are calling on vendors to cooperate in the relocation exercise.

Customers are also urged to refrain from encouraging vendors from doing business in unauthorised spots.

While the Commission understands the needs of vendors and their desire to do business where the bulk of the population is, and where it is safe, especially for female vendors, they are appealing for their understanding during this transitional period.

This change is expected to continue for the next 2 years.

The Commission further explains that all health and sanitation issues were accounted for in the relocation exercise preparations therefore they will not allow the creation of illegal informal markets.

NCDC, through the markets division, will continue their commitment to create safe spaces for vendors and customers and have established dialogue with the police hierarchy to ensure safety and minimise petty crimes.

The Boroko Market will undergo further revamp to make it conducive and secure.
